Orderless - CD installation

Heavily inspired by the shiny, reflective surface of the material, I wanted to use CDs for some kind of hanging installation for my project "Pure". I wanted to investigate the idea of something or someone being disordered. A lack of order. What happens when there is no order to something? What does it mean for something to be disordered?  I decided to show this through pieces of broken up CDs, as the mismatched, varied shapes supported the idea of a lack of order. In this piece, I dove into this, while simultaneously investigating reflective surfaces, and their relationship with light.

To begin, I constructed a frame using wooden skewers, string and a hot glue gun. Afterwards, I began breaking up the CDs into smaller, uneven pieces, to represent the notion of a lack of order. I began glueing them onto pieces of white thread, attaching the thread to the wooden frame. I varied the length of the pieces, to create more visual interest and more contrast. I decided to use white thread, as, when you look at the installation from afar, you are not able to see the thread, creating the illusion that the broken pieces of CDs are floating around.

When it came to capturing the installation, I tried out both indoors and outdoors, as well as taking photos from different angles to achieve a variety of outcomes. I believe that the outcome is quite successful, mainly due to the material ad its reflective properties. The light reflects off of one piece, bouncing to another and reflecting off of that one, creating streams of colourful lights all around it. Something that I would do differently if I had the opportunity, would be to scale up the piece. Ideally I would like to have the pieces of string with the CDs hanging off of the ceiling, to achieve a much more immersing effect, however, I simply wasn't able to achieve that due to the lockdown circumstances.

The installation can be seen in the photographs below.
